A needle meat tenderizer with ultra-sharp stainless steel blades that pierce the meat to break down its fibres, so marinades reach the middle and tougher cuts cook tender. Unlike a mallet it opens the cut without flattening it, which is what you want for steak and anything going on the BBQ whole.
